His best year was 1961 when he had a season high 82 hits with 7 homeruns. After retiring as a player, he was a coach for three seasons (1966 to 1967, 1980) with the Houston Astros and San Diego Padres. In 177 career games, Heist had 126 hits with a .255 lifetime batting average.
