Maria Gerthrud was born in Möse, Westphalia, Prussia (modern-day Germany) to Johann Heinrich Winkelmann and Anna Maria Heucker. She had a twin brother Hermann Heinrich (who is also buried in Old St. Joseph Cemetery).
Maria immigrated to the United States with her family in 1846, departing the Port of Bremen in August aboard the ship Elisabeth Denison and arriving at the Port of New Orleans on Dec. 24.
Maria was married to Heinrich Joseph Adrian on Nov. 18, 1856, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, Missouri, and they had four children.
Maria died at the age of 36 due to complications from the birth of their fifth child, a stillborn daughter.
