For over 30 years he helped beginning authors such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Jones, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Thomas Wolfe to become best-selling novelists. He was known to say "Just get it down on paper, and then we'll see what to do with it." His biography, "Max Perkins: Editor of Genius," was published by A. Scott Berg in 1997. The Mercantile Library Center for Fiction gives the Maxwell E. Perkins Award to honor the work of an editor, publisher, or agent who over the course of his or her career has discovered, nurtured and championed writers of fiction in the United States. His former home in New Canaan, Connecticut, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
