GATEWOOD, WILLIAM KEMP: Physician. Born in Middlesex Co., 3/5/36. Eldest son of a wealthy planter and physician in that county. Light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, 5' 6" tall. Studied at the Medical College of Va. and graduated from the Medical Department of Hampden Sydney College, in 1859. Married (1) Martha J. Bowden, in 1860 (5 children), (2) Mary Mandeville McCandlish, in December '79 (1 surviving child). Enlisted in Co.C, 7/18/61. Served as a hospital steward at Urbanna from October '61 until discharged by reason of having been appointed Post Master at Saluda, Middlesex Co., 2/5/62. Appointed an Acting Asst. Surgeon, 8/24/63 and assigned to the 3rd Division at Jackson Hospital, Richmond, the next day. As officer of the day on 8/28/63, he submitted a morning report suggesting a number of improvements. He served at Jackson Hospital until 1/25/64, after which he was employed for a while at Camp Holmes, in N.C.. From July '64 until the end of the war he was back in Richmond assessing the fitness of convalescents on detail, some of whom he returned to front line duty. Post-war physician in Middlesex Co.. Appointed Health Officer at West Point, King William Co. in the 1880s and was still serving as such in 1900. Member of the Medical Society of Va. and of the Society of Southern Railway Surgeons. Died, 3/7/1909
