He had enlisted under his true name, Jonathan H Groesbeck, on November 23, 1863 at Utica, NY. He was assigned to Company H, 14th NY Volunteer Field Artillery. On April 23, 1864, Vickory deserted. On May 10, 1864, he enlisted, as a private, in the 2nd Mass Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. When Vickory's enlistment with the 2nd Mass expired, Vickory enlisted into the regular army on July 20, 1865, under the alias Jonathan Vickory. He was described as 19 yrs old, 5'9", blue eyes, light hair with a light complexion. Vickory continued to reenlist with the army for the remainder of his life. On September 10, 1866, Vickory reported for duty at Ft Riley, KS. He was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. On September 21, 1866, Vickory was promoted to corporal. On January 25, 1867, he was promoted to sergeant. On May 15, 1876, Vickory became the Regimental Standard Bearer for the 7th Cavalry. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Vickory, as the standard bearer, accompanied LTC George Armstrong Custer. Vickory was killed sometime during the fighting. After the battle, soldiers assigned to burial details and knew Vickory, reported finding his body on Last Stand Hill, near the body of LTC Custer. Vickory was likely first buried where he had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
