Major League Baseball Player. He played Major League Baseball as an outfielder for sixteen seasons (1958 to 1973) with the Chicago White Sox (1958 to 1959), Philadelphia Phillies (1960 to 1969), Chicago Cubs (1970 to 1971) and New York Yankees (1972 to 1973). Although he played parts of his first two seasons with the White Sox, he spent the bulk of his career as a Phillies outfield mainstay who hit with power and had a strong, accurate arm, complimenting slugger Richie Allen during their tenure on the team (to date his 1,379 games played in the outfield ranks fourth on the Phillies' all-time list). He hit over 20 home runs four seasons in a row, topping with 32 in 1965 (as well as driving in 101 RBIs), and was named to the 1962, 1964 and 1965 National League All-Star teams. In the 1964 All-Star Game at New York City's Shea Stadium, he won the game for the Senior Circuit with a dramatic, walk-off 3-run home run in the 9th inning off Boston Red Sox relief specialist Dick Radatz, and was named the games Most Valuable Player, the only Phillie to ever win such honors. His statistical numbers declined towards the later part of the 1960s, but he remained one of the most popular sports figures in Philadelphia during his time. However, on November 17, 1969 he was dealt to the Chicago Cubs for Oscar Gamble. He spent two years with Chicago, then was traded to the New York Yankees, with whom he spent his last two years before being released and retiring. His career totals were 1,886 games played, 1,757 hits, 926 runs, 226 home runs, 840 runs batted in, and a career .264 batting average. His 185 home runs hit as a Phillie places him 12th in that category on the all-time list for the team. He led all National League outfielder in assists 4 years in a row (1962 to 1965), led the NL in triples twice (10 in 1962 and 16 in 1965) and in doubles once (40 in 1966).
