Alan Grover Carey, 58 years old, of Merriam, KS, was welcomed at Heaven's Gate on December 8, 2004, by his sister, Elaine Dowell, who died in December 1981, and his "Pop," who died in June 1986. Alan was born on September 3, 1946, in Tulsa, OK, the son of Alvin Earl and Thelma Grover Carey. His early years were spent in Miami, Andarko, Norman and Broken Bow in Oklahoma and in Winfield, KS. When he was in the second grade, his dad took a teaching position with the Air Force school system in Europe. The family lived the following years in London, England, and at the Rhein Main Air Base in Germany. Alan graduated from the Frankfurt American High School in 1964 and returned to the United States to attend the University of Oklahoma. He joined the U.S. Army in 1966 and served two years in Vietnam. He came home to live in Kansas City, attended Johnson County Community College and Rockhurst University and was then employed by Duffens Optical for 31 years, retiring in June 2004. Alan was a Free spirit and a Quaker at heart. He enjoyed gardening and his cat, Smoky, wrote poetry and was a gourmet cook. He and the great chefs of history are no doubt competing in that test kitchen in the sky. At his request, Alan's extensive library of cookbooks and ones on world and religious history will be donated to the Johnson County Library. Alan is survived by his mom, Thelma Carey of Miami, OK; his sister, Meredith Jackson of Gardner, KS; an aunt, Katherine Witte of Andarko, OK; nephews, Randall Jackson of Prairie Village, Barry Jackson of Edgerton, KS, and Keith Dowell of Pearl, MS; and a niece, Beverly Werner of Lusby, MD. No services are planned. His ashes will join those of his sister scattered at the family grave-site in Miami, OK. (Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS, 913-856-7111)
