Another Landmark Gone
Hiram Thayer was born at Auburn, N. Y., Dec. 23, 1818. Raised in WESTFIELD, Chautauqua CO NY Died at his home in Bradford, Iowa, June 10, 1899. He was one of 16 children, 10 boys and 6 girls. Two brothers are still living. Moved to Rockton, ILL., in 1842. In 1843 married to Mary Atkinson. In 1847 returned to NY., settling at Ashville, in Chautauqua CO . In 1856 came to Howard County, Ia., and in 1859 removed to Bradford, where he continued to reside until death. Five sons and four daughters were born in this home. Three sons and three daughters still live to cherich the memory of their father and comfort their aged mother in her declining years.
At the age of 18 years, Mr. Thayer united with the Baptist church and in 1853 changed his church relation to the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a good man, and lived to do good. For many years he led the singing in the Bradford church. Many young people 25 years ago, learned to sing under his instruction. He was the composer of many songs, both words and music. His songs, mainly were on the subject of temperance and patriotism. A few selections of his composition found their way into some of our Sunday School singing books. Mr. Thayer has a place in the book entitled "Poets of America." In this volume you will find his portrait, with a short sketch of his life and a few selections of his poems. One of his choicest compositions in "Poets of America" is**"Zimenia" a legend of Chautauqua Lake**, at which place Mr. Thayer at one time resided. His campaign songs, especially brought him into notoriety, and he thus made the acquaintance of many of the leading politicians and statesmen of Iowa and other states.
For many years he was justice of the peace and for over 22 years was postmaster. Thus another ancient landmark has been removed, another aged pilgrim has laid down the burdens of life.
The funeral service was conducted at the home by Rev. W. B. Davis, Tuesday afternoon, June 13st. the mother and the three sons and three daughters being present. The mortal remains were laid away in the beautiful Greenwood cemetery until the resurrection morning.
