Joann Marlene "Momma Jo" Newsted, Kalamazoo, Mich. Jo went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday morning, March 31, 2016 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was born on January 26, 1936 in Hart, Michigan, the daughter of Floyd and Helen (Feister) Arnold.

Jo was united in marriage to Robert Newsted (from 1955-1990) and they had four children together. She was then married to Ronald Slager (from 2002-2015).

Jo was a 1954 graduate (and cheerleader!) of Hart High School and attended Lake Michigan College and Western Michigan University. She worked for Clark Equipment Company (Buchanan), First National Bank (Niles), and The Hearing Aid Center (Kalamazoo). Jo was a faithful member of the Methodist Church her entire life. She was also a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority as well as a charter member of the Metallica Fan Club. Jo enjoyed traveling, and she was blessed to visit Germany, Ireland, England, Belgium, Australia, Mexico, and Haiti. She enjoyed golfing, playing Jeopardy, collecting angel figurines, and she was a voracious reader. But, above all, she enjoyed being with people.

Momma Jo's favorite times included those spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was passionate about attending their concerts, plays, sporting contests, and school events. She especially loved family gatherings and trips up north. A great joy for Jo came in serving others. She will be fondly remembered for visiting those in need and sincerely loving every person that crossed her path. She was a shining example of doing what Jesus would do.

Jo was preceded in death by the grandparents who raised her, Curtis and Leona Feister, as well as her parents and two brothers, Wayne and Mark Arnold.

She is survived by former spouses Robert Newsted and Ronald Slager; four children, Timothy (Catherine) of Hastings, Gregory (Marta) of Kalamazoo, Jason (Nicole) of Jupiter, Florida, and Sara of Middleville; seven grandchildren, Angela (Eric) McCarty, Benjamin, Michael, Ariana (Colin) Wilson, Andre, Vaughan and Faylene Guy; four great-grandchildren, Marcus, Logan, Alaina McCarty and Liam Wilson; along with several cousins and close friends, who were considered family members.

Per Jo's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Gull Lake United Methodist Church in Richland. Family will receive friends for a time of visitation at the church from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. A soup supper, at Momma Jo's request, will be served immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Kalamazoo Youth for Christ.
