[1902] KS--NeoshoCnty History-pg 250-251 reads CHARLES E ALEXANDER One of the well-known early settlers of CanvlTwp, Neosho Cnty, is Charles Alexander of Earlton. He settled in this locale in the spring of 1870, entered a claim & has been identified with the cnty since. He endured the privations of the lean years of the early seventies, suffered with the rest, the inconveniences of the frontier settler; passed down into the substantial & encouraging condi-tions of the later days with energy stimulated & appetite sharpened by the grit of experience. Alexander comes from the state of Pennsylvan-ia, where in WarrenCnty he was born 2 Apr 1836. He was a son of JamesL & Louisiana Willard Alexander, who came into PA from the state of CT & located at Wrightsville in the forepart of the nineteenth century, as the father was a mechanic-shoemaker-it was deemed important by the parents that our subject should also have a trade. He was put to the cooper's trade at a youthful age, which trade was important & profitable, being as he was in close proximity to the oil field where the demand for barrels was even greater than the supply. His trade was finished & he was drawing $3 a day when the CivilWar came on & the president issued his call for troops. He offered his services to the government but, on examination, he was found to be physically unsound & was for the time rejected. He continued his trade till sometime in 1864 when he again offered to enlist & was accepted without medical examination. It was in the month of March that he joined Company I, Fourteenth PA Cavalry & was in, during the year & a half he was out, 45 engagements & skirmishes, his company being the severest loser in the list of regimental casualties.
