James D. Hankins died, at his home in Rayville, Monday night at the age of 87 years. Mr. Hankins had an attack of the flu and, at his advanced age, was unable to rally.
He was the son of Daniel and Sally Hankins. He was born in Warren Co., MO January 18, 1840. He came with his parents to Ray County while still a youth. Since that time he had lived on a farm west of Rayville, until last fall when he moved into Rayville.
He served in the Civil War.
He had been a member of the Union Church.
In 1873, he was married to Sally Miller Nelson. Two children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. During the next few years, Mrs. Hankins died.
August 23, 1885 he was married to Mary J. Frazier, and two children were born to them.
He is survived by his wife, three children, Mrs. Etta McQuerrey; Mrs. Bert Hartman; and Edward Hankins, all of Rayville; one sister, Katherine Gant; and several grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Rayville Wednesday, by Rev. Doyle. Burial was made in Union Cemetery.
