John Joseph Harding was born on a farm in Miami County, Indiana. The youngest of a large farm family, he many times ran away from home, once traveling many miles with the Ringling Brothers Circus.
A few years later, he ran away from home and joined the Army.
In 1923, he met and married Georgia Voorhis. The couple had 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren.
A lifelong student of American history, he had a huge collection of Civil War artifacts and was also fascinated with the American Revolution. He visited Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields and historic sights many times, often memorizing the grounds so he could find his way around unaided.
