Frederick - Memorial service for RUTH O. BURKE, 95, Frederick, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Gray Gish Funeral Home Chapel, Frederick, with the Rev. Charles Graves, First United Methodist Church pastor, officiating.
Mrs. Burke died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, in Frederick.
Family graveside will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Frederick Memorial Cemetery, Frederick. Arrangements are under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home, Frederick.
She was born March 14, 1911, in Big Pasture, Tillman County, Oklahoma, to Thomas N. and Nannie Euzella (Averett) Hammonds. She attended Reita and Victory schools before graduating from Grandfield High School in 1928.
She married Bruce Littleton Burke, a graduate of Frederick High School, on Dec. 21, 1930. She and her husband resided in Grandfield, where they farmed. In 1942, they moved to Frederick. She was active in PTA and she helped establish a Girl Scouts troop in Frederick. She was a mother advisor for the Rainbow Girls and a sponsor of the Vagabonds. Also, she volunteered at the Frederick Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years. She was named Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was involved in numerous ministries and was in the Homer Tilley Sunday school class for many years.
Survivors include three daughters, Marye Tommye Smith, Oklahoma City, Bette Bruce MacKellar and husband Jim, Oklahoma City, and Jan Hammonds Rhodes and husband Bob, Iowa Park, Texas; four grandchildren, Karee Mashelle Robertson, Angie Duncan and husband Clint, Bruce MacKellar and wife Bebe, Jennie Lewis and husband Ryan; three great-grandchildren, Tiffany Smith and husband Shawn, Codie Duncan, and James Bolen MacKellar; one great-great-grandchild, Trenton Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Leon Hammonds; a son-in-law, Dr. Jack C. Smith; and twin great-grandsons: Blake and Robert Gallagher.
