Larkin Holt Anderson was born in 1844 (stone is incorrect, according to research) in Kentucky to Roger Holt and Mary Molly Anderson. Larkin married Sarah A. and had an unknown number of children. Larkin served the South during the war, fighting as a private in the 7th Unit of Arkansas Infantry. After the war, Larkin returned home. Larkin died in 1895 in Harrison, Arkansas.

Father William Anderson (1799-1872)
Mother Eunus Anderson (1804-1876)
The birth year on Larkin's headstone is "roughly" correct. He was born in either 1843 or 1844. Some records say April 11, 1843. Larkin is shown on several census records, including 1850 and 1860, as being the son of William and Eunus (Eunice) Anderson. He was not 87 years old as suggested in the bio based on the 1880 census. He would have been about 37 years old in 1880.

Larkin had a sister named Lucy Anderson (b. 1838). Lucy married my great-great-grandfather Samuel T. Wells. Larkin married Samuel's sister Sarah Ann Wells.

Thank you for your message asking about Larkin's parents.

The 1850 census shows Larkin as a 7-year old male in the household of William, age 50, and "Unis" (her name is spelled differently on just about every record), age 46. The census does not include relationship information, so it would be possible for Larkin to be the grandson of William and Unis, but seemingly unlikely because of the small age gap. His sister Lucy (my great-great grandmother) is listed as age 12.

The 1860 census shows Larkin now as a 17-year old male in the household of William, age 60, and Unes, age 56. Lucy is also listed as age 22. Once again though, the 1860 census doesn't show relationships so we can't be certain.

It's also worth noting that in both census documents William is listed as being born in Tennessee, while Unes is listed as being born in Kentucky. The locations are the same in both cases too. So with two separate documents and consistency of information such as birthplaces and location, it is at least clear that a Larkin belonging to the household of William and Unes was born in about 1843, consistent with the date on his grave's headstone.

Unfortunately I have yet to find Larkin in the 1870 census. So the trail goes a bit cold there. And then of course there's the 1880 census that's referenced on Larkin's Findagrave Memorial. The copy of the actual census record is a bit problematic. First, it does appear to list Larkin as being 87 years old. But a careful look at the handwriting of the census-taker calls this into question. Looking at Sarah's age directly below Larkin's it appears that the census-taker drew his '3's with a closed or nearly-closed loop on top. The census-taker also looped the bottom of the '3'. That makes me wonder if the '8' in Larkin's transcribed age of 87 is actually a '3'. If that were the case, then both Larkin and Sarah's ages on this census would be correct. The census location is correct too (Larkin was granted a land patent in Boone County in 1882). However, there's one other issue: in this census Larkin's father is listed as born in Kentucky while his mother is listed as born in Tennessee - the exact opposite of how they were listed in 1850 and 1860. My guess is the census-taker merely wrote these locations down in opposite order.

The only other thing noteworthy is that I could find no record of any Larkin Anderson born in or near 1793 living in the Fulton / Boone County areas of Arkansas. In fact, a general search for anybody with the first initial "L", last name Anderson, born in 1793 +/- 5 years and living at any time in Arkansas turns up nothing. So as I mentioned above, I think the 1880 census record is a bit problematic.

Larkin's Memorial mentions parents as "Roger Holt and Mary Molly Anderson." I have searched multiple combinations and variations of these names and have turned up nothing. Basically I searched for any Roger Anderson (with and without the name Holt), with/without a wife named Mary or Mary Molly, and living at any time in Kentucky. The search returned no matches. So I'm not able to corroborate the Memorial's entry or find any support for it. It would be great to have a reference for where that information came from.

Thanks again, and thanks for all of the work you do on Findagrave. It's much appreciated!

Jeff
