Carrie Alice Coonrod Jan. 2, 1923 - Sept. 11, 2006 Carrie Alice Coonrod (formerly Johnston) passed away in Yuba City, California, on September 11, 2006, at the age of 83. She was born January 2, 1923, in Garland, Kansas, and raised on a farm. She graduated from Fort Scott (Kansas) High School in 1940, and went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and her teaching credential at Kansas State College, Pittsburg. During World War II she worked in the Boeing factory in Wichita on summer breaks. In 1946, she married John Coonrod, of Cato, Kansas, and they settled near Corcoran, California. There she taught school for several years and started a family. In 1957, she and John moved to Taft, where she continued her teaching career. She taught fourth grade for 21 years at Jefferson School. Throughout the years Carrie participated in Eastern Star, AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma, Buena Vista Ladies Golf Association, California Teachers Association, National Education Association, and more recently the California Retired Teachers Association and the Yuba City Moose Lodge. During their time in Taft, John and Carrie were members of the Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church. Carrie also enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, sewing, and needlework. In 1997, John and Carrie moved to Yuba City to be closer to their family. Survivors include daughter Carol and Joe McCaulley, of Yuba City, daughter Marjorie and Bob Scofield, of Woodland, and grandchildren Philip McCaulley and Elaine McCaulley of Yuba City, and Jeff Scofield of Woodland. She is also survived by brothers Roy Johnston of Omaha, Nebraska, and Raymond Johnston of Olathe, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Coonrod, of Yuba City; parents Burl and Ethel (Wise) Johnston of Garland, Kansas; brothers Albert Johnston, Garland, Kansas; Ellsworth Johnston, Garland, Kansas; Kenneth Johnston, Joplin, Missouri; sisters Alma Vanderpool, Wellington, Kansas; Ruth Smith, Winfield, Kansas. At her request, after cremation, Carrie will be buried with her husband at San Joaquin National Cemetery, Santa Nella, California. Services will be private. Donations in remembrance of Carrie can be made to Sutter North Hospice, 826 Fourth St. Marysville, CA 95901, or the American Cancer Society.
