Death of H.J. Wichers
Aged Citizen of Southern Smith County Died Saturday Morning

H.J. Wichers, an old and highly respected citizen of southern Smith county, passed away at his home seven miles north of Downs on Saturday, April 8, in the 81st year of his age. Mr Wichers was among the best known men of that section and was the father of Henry Wichers of this city.

H.J. Wichers was born in Harson under-Gorsel, in Holland, March 18, 1836. He joined the Holland Christian Reformed church at the age of 22 years, and remained a faithful and devoted member all his life. He was married May 6, 1867, to Gertrude Dingerink. To this union was born six children, all of whom survive him, and all of whom with the exception of John Wichers, live in this community. John Wichers moved to Washington three years ago. There were four sons and two daughters.

Mr. Wichers came with his family to America in 1871 and lived in Paterson, New Jersey, until 1878, when he moved to Smith county, Kansas, where he continued to reside until his death. Mr. Wichers was a splendid citizen and a man who held the respect and high regard of all who knew him. His influence in his community was always for good, and his death will cause much regret among his many friends.

Funeral services were held at the West Dispatch church on Tuesday, April 11, at 2:00 o’clock p.m., the sermon being preached by Rev. Hylkema, a former pastor, now of Prairie City, Iowa. The funeral was largely attended by his old friends and neighbors, who came to pay their last respects to a splendid citizen. Interment was made in the Dispatch cemetery.
