Lieutenant James A. Boarts, Company B, Twenty-Second Regiment, Iowa Infantry Volunteers.

James was severely wounded on 19 September 1864 in the Battle of Winchester at Winchester, Virginia. "Lieutenant James A. Boarts, a most promising young man, received a mortal wound." On December 7,1864, editor of the Iowa City Republican, N. H. Brainard wrote: “Last Thursday (December 1, 1864) I attended the funeral of Lieut. James A. Boarts.

When the war first broke out, Lieutenant Boarts, then 19 years of age, enlisted in the Iowa first, as a private, and shared all the hardships of the short, but severe campaign of Wilson’s creek where he was wounded. When the 22nd infantry was made up, he enlisted in Captain Gearkee’s Company B and was elected second lieutenant.

He participated in all the severe labors of that noble regiment until the terrible battle of Winchester, the 19th of September last when he was severely wounded in the head and died a few days after. The body has just been recovered and brought home and was entered in our new city cemetery last Thursday.

A SQUAD of soldiers were in attendance under the command of Lieutenant Wilson, who gave a soldier’s farewell salute over the grave of their fallen comrade.

Thus was gone another of our heroes to his long sleep, as an offering on the altar of his country. As we see one after another thus offering up their young lives in this sacred cause, it should deepen our regard for that country which they are trying to redeem at such a cost, and nerve us all with new determination that it shall yet be rescued from all foes who may assail it.” Source: Iowa City Press-Citizen (Iowa City, Iowa), Monday, 30 May 1960, page 2.
