Probably born in Virginia, his family moving to Kentucky when he was two. Enlisted in the Texas militia in New Orleans in 1836 and traveled to Texas to fight against Mexico during the battle for Texas independence, but arrived at San Jacinto too late to participate. Left the army the following year and took on the job of surveying Houston before finding work as a boat captain, working his ship along the Trinity River and Buffalo Bayou; he piloted the first steam vessel to the head of navigation on the bayou. He married Catherine Batterson in Harrisburg on December 8, 1840 in a double ceremony with Catherine's mother. On March 24, 2007, he and ninety others were honored with commemorative Republic of Texas medallions on their gravestones.
