Mary was the daughter of Elisha Smith and Mary Butler Bass and descendant of Mayflower pilgrim John Alden. Her grandfather was Congressman Josiah Smith. Second wife of Dr Milton Buckingham Cushing Sr married 12 Jun 1836 in Baptist Church, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; mother of:

Mary would often recall one of her childhood memories; attending her grandfather's funeral with her cousin President John Adams' carriage heading the funeral procession.
