UNION - Clayton D. Barfield, 82, of 104 Hicks St. died Aug. 29, 2000, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home following an extended illness.

A native of Georgetown, he was the husband of Vera Quinn Barfield and son of the late Lawrence B. and Rebecca McCelveen Barfield.

He was a member and mason of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was retired supervisor of the packing and shipping department of the Charlotte Observer.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Elaine McGavock of Lancaster; two sisters, Mary Butler and Dessie Barfield, both of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Shelton Barfield of Dallas, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Jim Cunningham and Bill Parker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight, and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 104 Hicks St., Union.
