Deborah Ferrand died of measles in 1890. Heartbroken, her father, Horace, sent her photograph to an artist in Italy and commissioned an angel in her likeness to be made of Carrara marble.

The "little angel" of Evergreen Cemetery exerts a strange pull over those who wander by. The lifelike face has eyes that seem to follow you. Although Deborah lived only eight years, the angel has been around for 116 years, surviving moves across the country and vandalism.

Mr. Ferrand is buried next to his daughter, his wife Annie, and several other family members in Evergreen Cemetery.
