Blackfoot Chieftan. Born Dominique La Plante in Canada, a member of the Blackfoot nation. In his youth he served as a scout with the US Army. He later worked as a member of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, during and after which he became a well-known model, posing for such artists as Fredrick Remington and Eulabee Dix, whose miniature of Thunder Cloud is on display in the National Portrait gallery. A now iconic photograph of him taken in Omaha in 1898 by F. A. Rinehart, has since been translated into numerous media including scrimshaw, oil paint, and pop art. Legend has it that his was the face that served as the model for the US 5 cent coin, as well as the last 5 dollar gold piece minted in the US.
