Robert Anderson III was born on March 26, 1824 in the Pollokshaws District of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were Robert Anderson II (a master baker) and Margaret Russell. Robert immigrated to the United States and arrived at the port of New York City on or about March 20, 1842 (source: Naturalization Record). He immediately settled in the "New District" of Boston, Massachusetts where his maternal aunt, Jean (or Jane) Russell Taylor, was living. Jean married a baker named Thomas Taylor who also operated a grocery store. Robert worked for Thomas for a few years. On March 5, 1851 he married his first wife, Lucy Helen Peterson (youngest daughter of Captain Daniel and Sarah Peterson). They were married in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. Rev. Jacob R. Scott was the officiant. They had two children named Hewet Taylor (born in Maine) and William McGowan (born in Boston). The Andersons then moved to 113 Cole Street in Jersey City, New Jersey where Lucy died on June 19, 1857 (she was 27 years old). Robert then married his 2nd wife, Sarah Elizabeth Martin (daughter of Charles Martin & Susan Shope). Their wedding took place on November 11, 1857 in New York. They lived in Brooklyn and had four children named Malcolm Charles, Jennie Russell (Mrs. Baumann and Mrs.Harvey Edward Simpson), Robert Lincoln, & Agnes Baird (Mrs. Joshua Ellis Rohrer). Robert (Senior) was an accountant, clerk, and teller in that city. He was also a licensed Episcopal preacher for Brooklyn's Marine Barracks Chapel on Flushing Avenue & The Asylum For The Insane at Flatbush. The Episcopal Bishop of Long Island, Abraham Newkirk Littlejohn, gave the license. On March 27, 1885 Robert died and was buried at the Jersey City Cemetery.

Note: Robert's youngest brother, John, was buried at the the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. Their step-mother, Marion Miller was buried with her daughter's family at the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, IL. His maternal grandfather, William Russel, was buried at the Old Kilsyth Cemetery in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
