Co-founder of P&O Steam Navigation Co, MP, school founder.
Business magnate and philanthropist. He co-founded with Brodie M Wilcox, the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company to operate to Portugal and Spain, in 1837, which is still in operation today. He was also British Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Orkney 1847-1852, and he also provided schools there. In 1859, he founded the Lower Norwood working Men's Institute in London, Later to become Norwood Technical College.
