EARLEAN BROOKS, 73, of Fort Wayne, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at Lutheran Hospital. Born in Marion, Ala., she came to Fort Wayne as a child. She was a 1952 graduate of Central High School and soon became the first black office clerk for the Allen County Public Library. "She was an avid reader and wonderful storyteller." She retired from the library after 44 years of service. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Thomas; two sons, Thomas "Al" and Gary (Becky) Brooks; stepdaughter, Thelma (Alonzo) Maxwell; siblings, Bessie Tharp, Beatrice (Hardie) Dansby and Arbreyse Chapman, Cora Clay of Honolulu, Haiwaii, Edward Chapman of Minneapolis, Minn., Mary Jacobs of Rockville, Md. and Joyce (Albert) Johns of Berea, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Alysia (Jarone) Shaw, Talisa Dudley, Marcus, Carrie, Corrie and Callie Brooks; eight great-grandchild-ren; five sisters-in-law, Fannie Adams, Astine Lavender, Lucille Hickman, Lillie Brooks and Rosa Chapman; one brother-in-law, Dewitt Brooks of Mobile, Ala.; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Beatrice Chapman; son, Stacey; and brother, Prince Chapman. Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1331 Gay St., with calling from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ellis Funeral Home 1021 E. Lewis St. Burial in Covington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
