U.S. Congressman. He moved to Illinois with his parents in 1837 and became a lawyer in 1852. He served in the Army during the Civil War, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and commanding Infantry and Cavalry units in campaigns throughout the South. After the war, he resumed his Illinois law practice. In 1868, Crebs was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1869 to 1873. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1872, after which he again returned to his law practice.
