Governor of South Carolina. Henegan was born and raised in Marlboro County, South Carolina and earned his medical degree in Germany. He was elected as a South Carolina State Senator for the first time in 1834 for the Marlboro district, and served in that capacity until 1838. From there, he served as Lieutenant Governor under then Governor Patrick Noble. Henegan became Governor in 1840 when Noble died. Four years later he was elected a second time to the State Senate, but this time from the Marion district. From 1846 until 1850, he served as Secretary of State for South Carolina.
