Funeral services for Grace L. Heintz, former Harrold resident, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harrold, with the Rev. Brian Lemcke officiating. Burial will be at Medicine Hill Cemetery at Harrold.
Visitation will be at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thurs., April 29, with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m.
Grace Lucile Bohannon was born Nov. 13, 1921, to Ivan and Frances (Conway) Bohannon in Green Cove Springs, Fla., and died April 26, 2004, at St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 13 days.
She was one of seven children. Their father was a Baptist minister, serving in various churches in the Jacksonville, Fla., area. The family struggled financially during Grace's childhood and adolescence, many times subsisting on donations of food from the congregation to get by. Despite this, Grace's childhood was happy.
During World War II, Grace and her sister lived and worked in Jacksonville, where both met their future husbands who were stationed at Lee Naval Base. Grace and Woodrow Heintz were united in marriage on Sept. 11, 1942. To this union two children were born.
Plans were made to live in Florida, but Woodrow could not adjust to the climate and was homesick for South Dakota, so they moved to Harrold in 1945.
The family lived in Harrold, where Woodrow worked as a barber and in the early 1960s bought and operated the Harrold Sundries store, which offered meals, liquor, veterinary supplies, insurance, and haircuts in the back room. Grace worked in the store until it was closed in 1969.
She worked at the Red Owl store in Pierre briefly, then began working at the Harrold School as a bookkeeper and office manager. During her years there, she was mother, grandmother, friend, nurse and confidante to many of the students. She earned her GED diploma during this time, took various classes in bookkeeping, and was always trying to improve her education. She also helped Woodrow in his insurance sales, taught piano to grandchildren and neighbor children, consumed crossword puzzles and enjoyed being a grandmother.
She retired from her position at the school in 1989, and she and Woodrow enjoyed their retirement and time spent with family, especially their twin grandsons. They also traveled back to Florida several times to visit Grace's family.
Grace moved into an apartment in Harrold after the death of her husband in 2000, and then into Kelly's Retirement Home in Pierre, where she lived the last two years of her life.
Grace will be remembered by her family for her courage and strength, her love of music and learning, her love and devotion to family and friends, her endless sense of humor and her sometimes sharp tongue, always used with a smile and love.
Survivors include: her son, Gary Heintz of Pierre; her daughter, Debra Hobert of Harrold; six grandchildren: Kristine Giroux of Lenexa, Kan., Jacqueline Wilcox of Harrisburg, Rebecca Heintz of Chandler, Ariz., Michael and Scott Hobert of Harrold, and Matthew Heintz of Pierre; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and two sisters.
