Anne Marie Fishburne

Anne Marie Fishburne died at her home in Raleigh on June 8 after a 12-year battle against cancer. She was 50.
A native of Albany, Ga., she grew up in Greensboro, where she received a bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina. She received a law degree in 1979 from the UNC School of Law. Her work in the public and private sectors on women's issues included positions with Wayne County Community College, general counsel for a women's health and exercise agency in Charlotte, the N.C. Council on Status of Women supporting programs to encourage women in business, and the N.C. Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She was the first executive director of the coalition and was involved in a statewide media campaign targeting teen boys to prevent date rape. She was a member of the N.C. Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Millbrook Baptist Church in Raleigh. The labyrinth will be open prior to and after the service for those wishing to meditate and reflect on Anne's life. The family will receive guests immediately following the service in the fellowship hall at the church.
Survivors include two daughters, Stacey Fishburne Vernon and Kelly Fishburne Vernon, both of the home; her mother, Kitty Lemon Dawson of Greensboro; her father, E. Ritchie Fishburne of Greensboro; three brothers, Chip Fishburne of Alpharetta, Ga., Keith L. Fishburne of Wendell and Eddie Fishburne of Raleigh; and lifelong friend Betty Nixon Morgan of Greensboro.
