John C. Whitson was born 25 June 1833 in Perry County, Tennessee. He was the son of Harrison Whitson and his first wife, name unknown.
He married Martha C. Kelly Whitson, daughter of John and Jerusha Ruth Shoemake Kelly, about 1858 in Perry County.
They became the parents of nine children:

John served in Union Army as a private with Company F, 2nd TN Mounted Infantry. All of John's brother's served with the Confederacy. John was the only son to survive the Civil War.
According to the family Bible, John and Martha died within minutes of each other.
