Charles Bernard Hurd was born 13 Aug 1913 in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada to Daniel Harvey Hurd and Emma May Greenup while the family was living in the mountains and Daniel was working in a remote gold mine. The family moved to Atascadero, CA in 1915 when Charley was 2.
Charley graduated high school in Templeton, CA, and Technical Radio and Electricity and Electronics School of Southern California. He worked in the technical field until he was drafted.
Charley and his sister Eva traveled to 87 countries during their retirement years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed woodworking and amateur radio.He was a long time resident of Oxnard and San Luis Abispo. Having never married, he had lived with his sister Eva for many years until she died in 1997, then he moved up to Nevada Co. to Penn Valley, CA near his sister Pat who lived in Grass Valley.
Charley died 27 Nov 2005 in Grass Valley. He was survived by his sister Pat Hurd; nieces Joan Heinsohn of Trinity Center, CA, Jeanne Meredith of Desert Hot Springs, CA, Ruth Payne of Bakersfield, CA, and Evalyn Ellis of Big Bear Lake, CA; nephews, James Marston of Bakersfield, and Robert Watland of Paso Robles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Eva, Hurd, Retta Exline, Leah Jackson, Viola Van Horn, Wilbur Hurd, Floyd Hurd, Edith Watland, and Winnie Franck.
Charley served in the US Army in WWII from 1941 to 1945. he had been drafted into the Army and took basic at Camp Roberts. He served with the 25th. He was later at Ft. Lewis, WA. She shipped out of San Francisco to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and they arrbed shortly after the Japanese bombed there. Charley had trained in radio operations in Los Angeles so when the Army discovered this talent he was promoted from Pvt. straight to Sgt. as his skills were sorely needed. He was later sent to Guadalcanal. While in the South pacific he contacted malaria and was quite ill. He spent some time on a hospital ship, then in Saugus, and later was discharged from Van Nuys Hospital. After the war he worked for KVEC in San Luis Abispo, CA. Charley worked at point McGoo for 5 years as well and also in military and federal service and was in government service long enough to retire with a disability discharge. Charley also worked for a company that did appliance repair National Guard in San Luis Abispo. He worked with the Nike Missle and was also in Nevada with that project. His malaria came back and caused him to have a nervous breakdown, which was the reason he received the medical discharge.
