Swaburg Pioneer is Called by Death
Anders Christensen, one of the last of the old settlers of the
Swaburg community, passed away Sunday evening, July 21, at the
Lutheran Good Samaritan hospital in Fremont, at the age of 83
years, 11 months and 23 days. His death followed a long siege of
illnes from ailments incidental to old age.
Mr. Christensen was born on July 27, 1851, at Kielby, Magle paa
Morn, Denmark, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith and grew to young manhood. He came to the United States and
direct to Dodge county, Nebr., in 1874, where an older brother
lived. He took up a homestead 2 1/2 miles northeast of the present
town of Uehling, but after a couple of years sold it and bought the
farm in the Swaburg vicinity that had ever since been his home, and
in which community he had become to be a highly respected resident.
He was united in marriage on May 16, 1886, to Nielsine Laurentse
Nielsen, and they took up their married life on the farm he owned.
Though no children were born to this union, they, however, took
into their home a nephew and a niece, Leslie W. and Martha
Lauersen, the later now Mrs. Henry Egbers, whom they gave the
tender care of devoted parents.
He is survived by his wife, and beside the above named nephew and
niece, the following nephews and nieces as the close surviving
relatives Chris and Emil Christensen of Craig, Laurence C. Lauersen
of Fremont, Floyd E. Lauersen of Brewster, S. D., Raymond Lauersen
of Fordyce, Frederick Lauersen of Omaha, Mrs. Matilda Petersen of
Los Angeles, Mrs. Vera Wedergren of Tekmah, Mrs. Minnie McMullen of
Fremont, and Mrs. Celia Egbers of this locality..
The funeral arrangements in charge of Wollmer & Warne are for the
funeral to be held Friday afternoon with services at 1:30 at the
home and at 2 o'clock from the Admah Danish Lutheran church, with
Rev. F. G. Rasmussen of Fremont as the officiating minister. Mr.
Christensen was a Charter member of the Danish Brotherhood lodge
and members from this order will act as pall bearers, and conduct
the services at the grave in the church cemetery.
