Harrison Baker started out life abandoned as a baby by mother at a maternity home in Indianapolis at the age of 8 months old in 1928. Very little is known about his family, past, or medical background. Don't even know if any of his relatives or future kin knew of his existance. Harrison Baker is my father. I started a Geneology Search 10 years before his death and found out more than expected and was able to pass on the info to him and my mother. He actually was looking forward in knowing where he came from and the circumstances. But I was never able to locate much more, unfortunately. I kept trying, like racing the clock, to give my dad the priceless gift of his roots. I still haven't given up hope finding some offspring out there. A part of our family history.
I secured his original birth certificate, court records, and adoption records. He had his mothers maiden name-Baker. She may have been young, disowned by family, jobless. It was a different era, during the depression years. The parents names were Helen Baker and Claud Miller. Paperwork back then was scanty, not as detailed or thorough. No middle names, no birth dates or ages. What I do know is: He probably was born at the Florence Crittenton Home which was a Maternity Home, he was left there supposedly, but a home address was given as: 1033 S. Meridian, Indianapolis, Indiana. Most likely his mothers given address at the time. Nothing is known of the father, if it was a one night stand, a casual affair, maybe he was an older man or married or in the military. Don't even know if he was from the area. Court records shows the mother was in court alone to face the charges and sign over her rights so he could be adopted. Don't know what kind of emotions she felt or how difficult it was to say goodbye forever, being a mother in a hopeless situation. There were no police records back then for either parent that could be found. It did state Claud Miller lived in Marion County at the time, no town listed. I wonder if he even knew she was pregnant or had a son, or took off when he did find out.
He was placed in a Jewish Orphanage in Indianapolis and placed in a trial foster home, the couple from Detroit, Michigan were intent on adopting him and raising him, he was raised as an only child in a rich jewish family. He was 2 when they adopted him, and moved back to Chicago where he was raised. Their names were Minnie and Samuel Clayman, he was from Iowa. They divorced when my dad was 8. She remarried George Eales, her lifetime partner and a very devoted stepfather. Him and my dad were very close. His adoptive mom came from a large jewish family, so there were scores of relatives, though only alot of scattered cousins left. His adoptive name was Jack Howard Clayman. He died at the age of 62 of Leukemia. Buried under his legal adoptive name of Jack H. Clayman.
