SmSgt. (Ret.) John Roger "J.R." Welch,
of Bryson City and Brevard, peacefully passed away on Sunday morning, Jan. 23, 2005, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Born in November 1937, in Bryson City, he was the son of Ethel Rogers Welch and the late James Lyle Welch of Bryson City.

After graduating from Swain High School in 1955, he entered the United States Air Force with his cousin, Edward Roberts, and began a career as an Air Traffic Controller that lasted nearly 30 years. His time in the service took him across the country and around the world. He did tours in Michigan, South Dakota, Kansas, Washington, Florida, Indiana, and also spent time in Libya, England, The Azores, Korea and Germany. After retiring from the service, he settled in Bryson City, where he could relax and enjoy his favorite things. Some of those included reading, studying the weather, coin collecting, fishing and the Chicago Cubs and Bears. He spent the last three years living in Brevard with his daughter and to be near his physicians.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Lyle Welch, in 1981 and his brother, Robert Lyle Welch, in 1997.

In addition to his mother Ethel Welch, those left to share his wonderful memories are his daughter, Dana Kay Welch-Tabor and her husband, Steve, of Brevard, his son, Barry Steven Welch and his wife, Dena, of Jamestown, Ohio, his sister, Sara Welch Bounds of Smyrna, Ga., and his sister-in-law, Mildred Bailey Welch of Rogersville, Tenn., five grandchildren, Carly Tabor, Jessi Welch and her fiance, Kyle, Jake, Jared and Jenna Welch, special cousin, Edward Roberts of Hazelwood, nephews, Mark and his wife, Amy Welch, Derek Welch and Charlie Bounds, a niece, Rebecca Brown, and many great friends and family members.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Harris officiating. Burial will be in Swain Memorial Park.
