James F. Brownell, 78, formerly of 810 Emerson St., Beloit, and a resident of the Cedar Crest Retirement Home, Janesville, died Wednesday, April 4, 1990, at Cedar Crest.
A former Beloit resident he was born July 8, 1911 in Cudahy, Wis., the son of Ralph and Frances Weigand Brownell. He married Doris Higgins July 1, 1933 in Rockford, Ill.; she died in September 1976.
He graduated from Wisconsin State-Normal and Marquette University, Milwaukee, and did graduate work at Columbia University, New York, and Bank Street State College, New York City and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He was employed by the Beloit Public School System as a principal and teacher. He began his career at Gaston School as a teacher from 1933 to 1934. From 1934 to 1935 he was a teacher-principal at Merrill School. In 1935 he became full time pricipal at Merrill School and held that position until 1968. From 1968 until his retirement in 1973 he served at principal at Morgan School.
He was a member of First Methodist Church, Beloit, School District of Beloit Quarter Century Club and the Wisconsin Retired Teacher's Association.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan (Gus) Hangiandreou of Merrill, Wis. and Martha (Charles) Everill of Littleton, Col.; five grandchildren, Charles Everill Jr., Sarah Everill, Nick (Martha) Hangiandreou, Gabi (Stan) Jandreou, Kathryn Hangiandreou; one brother, Ralph (Alice) Brownell of Fowler, Ind.; two sisters, Jane (Harold) Wrasse of Ellicott City, Maryland and Grace (Stephen) Dolan of Greendale, Wis.
He was predeceased by his wife Doris and his parents.
Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 1990, in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Lance Herrick of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will follow. Interment will be held at a later date in the Burritt Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-4 p.m. Saturday, prior to the memorial service, at the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in his memory to the Beloit Public Library Foundation.
