Fireman and Trimmer Ernest E Downs in the Merchant Navy

The Stonepool and the Berury were torpedoed and sunk just east of Cape Farewell at 2:45 am on September 11, 1941. It is believed the attacker was a German U-boat U-207 which was in turn sunk a few hours later. The master Joseph Hewitson Nicholson, 33 crew members and eight gunners were lost. Six crew members and one gunner were picked up by HMCS Kenogami and landed at Loch Ewe. Downs was 53 years old.
