He served in the United States Navy. He was a crew member aboard an airplane that crashed on Feb 17, 1968 in Laos. He died while being listed as missing in action. His body was recovered at a later date and his is buried with his fellow crew members. He is listed on the Vietnam Veterans memorial in Washington D.C., Panel 39E - Line 69.


Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class Ashby was a member of Observation Squadron 67 located at the Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. On February 17, 1968, he was a crew member of a Lockeed Neptude Observation Patrol Aircraft (OP-2E) on an operational mission over Laos when the starboard engine of the aircraft caught fire and the aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on March 30, 1993 and identified on December 1, 1993
