John William Austin was the son of William and Harriett (Penn) Austin. He had one younger sister, Margaret.
Around his seventh year of age, his father passed away. He spent a short time in the 1860's living with his grandparents, Thomas and Elizabeth Penn, whom had settled in Prince William County from England.
On November 1, 1860, his mother married another recent widow, Benjamin Allen. This gave John three stepsisters, Anne, Sarah and Mary. Benjamin and Harriett would have three more children together, Charlotte, Henry and Edward.
Sadly, John's mother passed away five years later. His 3-month-old half-brother, Edward, passed less than a month before his mother and by the end of 1965, his 8-year-old step-sister, Mary, passed away.
He spent some time in the 1880's living with his stepsister Anne, her husband Newton Sayers and their three young daughters, Mary, Charlotte and Nettie.
He worked as a farmer, helping Newton at Massadale Farm.
It is not known if he ever married or had children.
