Benjamin Joseph Sayers was born in Manassas, Virginia, to Newton and Annie (Allen) Sayers. He was the fifth of nine children. His siblings were; Mary Hayth, Charlotte Kerlin, Nettie Hedrick, Minnie Baggott/Houghton, Robert, Blanche Beach, Grace Sayers and Rebecca Herbert.

In 1909, he married Christie Ann Herndon, daughter of John Henry Herndon and Georgianna (Tolson) Herndon.

Together, Benjamin and "Christine" had five children;

Mr. Robert Lee Sayers
Mrs. Leone (Sayers) Franke
Mr. Benjamin Franklin Sayers
Mr. Kenneth William Sayers
Mr. Elmer Allen Sayers

After their third child, Benjamin and Christine moved the family from Manassas, Virginia to Akron, Ohio. Together, they raised their family at their home on Kenmore Blvd.

Tragically, in 1932, their eldest child, Robert, was killed after being struck by a train. This caused Christine to become severely depressed and she spent three years, until her death, in a state hospital.

After his children were grown, he moved back home to Nokesville, Virginia, where he remained until his death.
