Mariann (Matson) Berg, 90, of Strum and formerly of Eleva died March 18,2008, at Crystal Lake Manor.

Mariann was born Jan. 4, 1918, near Strum to Helfred and Marie (Garson) Matson. She attended Johnson Valley Grade School, three years at Strum High School and graduated from Osseo High School in 1936. She married Stanley Berg on Sept. 2, 1938, and eventually settled on the Berg family farm south of Eleva where they were engaged in farming while Stanley also worked at Uniroyal. Mariann was a gracious hostess, and family and friends loved to visit. In 1966 they moved to Strum and resided at her grandparents' family home until 1994, when Mariann moved to Eleva Lutheran Housing.

In their retirement years, Stanley and Mariann enjoyed traveling and their lake home in Chetek. Mariann was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, and participated in many Norwegian celebrations. Although she only had nine piano lessons in her life, she was a very accomplished musician, and shared her talents with Eleva Lutheran, serving as the organist for more than 30 years. She also directed the bell choir, senior choir and various children's choirs in addition to teaching piano lessons. Next to her family, music was her life; and she believed that talent should be used and perfected to the highest possible degree.

Mariann is survived by three sons, Michael (Judy), Peter and David (Mary), all of Eleva. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Kari, Kathy, Jon, Karla, Susan and Steven. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Kyle, Chad and Morgan, Hope and Tucker, Ethan, Halle and Gwendolyn; one brother-in-law, Walter (June) Gehring; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, in 1992; her parents; daughter-in-law, Gwen Berg; grandson-in-law, Randy Hardrath; infant granddaughter, Kristin Ann Berg; sister, Carla (Erling) Nymo; and brothers, Roy (Blanche) and Norval (Gladys) Matson.
Mariann's family wishes to thank Crystal Lake Manor for the care and friendship during her 15-month stay.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Eleva Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kermit Solem officiating. Burial will be in Eleva Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home in Eleva, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
