7th Iowa Governor, Civil War Union Army Officer. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel and commanding officer of the 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and was seriously wounded at the Battle of Big Black River Bridge on May 17, 1863 during the Vicksburg Campaign. He was elected as a Republican as Governor of Iowa in 1867, and served a two terms from 1868 to 1872.
