Francis enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on January 11, 1941. During WWII he was stationed overseas for 37 months as an airplane mechanic. He reached the rank of Staff Sargeant. Francis returned home in about 1945.
While her husband served his country, Irene moved back to her parents' home in Mattoon, where she operated a beauty shop in her parents' front bedroom.
The couple had two children, Donald Francis, born in 1942 and Alice Louise, born in 1947. Both of the children were born in Mattoon, Illinois.
Arter leaving the service, Francis worked in Civil service at Rantoul Air Force Base, training airplane mechanics. In 1959, he got a job with Martin Marietta in Denver, Colorado. The family lived there until 1969, when Irene and Francis moved to Arlington, Texas for Francis's new job.
Francis retired in 1982. He was a member of the Westridge Baptist Church. He enjoyed studying the Bible and wirting about his interpretations of it.
On July 27, 2006, he passed away due to bone cancer. He was buried in Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery.
