John was the son of Peter Putman and Margaret Adams. He married Martha Jane King, and they were the parents of Oliver C. and Mary Etta.

After leaving his father's farm in Liberty Township, Van Wert County, OH, John, age 17, worked on the Pittsburg, Ft. Wayne and Chicago Railroad. The next year he was in Illinois, worked on a farm for two years, and then returned home to Van Wert County and purchased 47 acres, cleared the land for farming and cattle raising and built a house. He and his wife Martha Jane King Putman moved to Shanes Crossing (Rockford), Mercer County to farm and raise their children. Martha and son Oliver opened a hotel in Rockford.

From an 1896 or 1897 newspaper article:
"THE NEW PUTMAN HOUSE
"Open to The Public with W.F. Hileman as Clerk, Who has had Considerable experience with the traveling public.
"The Putman House is the best hotel in the county or in any town in the State of this size. It is an exceptionally fine Hostelry, it long felt want has now been supplied. The elegant new Hotel erected and furnished by our citizens, Mrs. Jane Putman and her son Oliver Putman, was opened to the public last week, though there will be several finishing touches put on both inside and outside."
