From the "Lima Daily News," August 5, 1917:
"The noon hours were spent by Lewis King in his shop making garden implements and he worked early and late getting his plot in condition and setting out his plants. The garden was located in an open field across from his house and occupies two full lots.
"Corn, potatoes, beans, beets, cabbage, radishes, tomatoes, peas, and a host of other plants are planted there, and despite blazing sun or blinding rain, the plot was not neglected. Some of his fellow employees were inclined to laugh at his efforts, but he was not discouraged.
"One week ago, five heads of the various departments visited the 43 gardens entered in the contest, and their decision was unanimously in favor of Mr. King's plot as worth of the $75 first prize award."
Lewis and his wife, Effie Olive Speese, had these children: Vera Laverne Conrad, Mary Catherine Emmerson, Harrold Fremont King, Shelby Leroy King, Thelma A. Sproul, Marcella Ellamae Carolas, and June Erdine Card.
