Elmer was an electric welder, and during World War II, he assisted in the assembly of trains for the Belmont Steel Corporation in Chester, PA. Most of his life was spent working for his brother Buster Compton's construction company in Princeton, WV.
Elmer was a quiet and gentle man who placed great value on being truthful. He had a wonderful sense of humor which endeared him to friends and family alike.
His most satisfying leisure activity was fishing, and he enjoyed many hours on the surrounding lakes and rivers. At work one day, he suffered an accidental blow to his head, which doctors believe contributed to his death from a brain tumor several years later.
Elmer was the son of Cornelius Moses Compton and Ora Kathrine Johnson.

He made his home with his sister, Mrs. Eva Houchins, 37 E. Mowry St., Chester, PA and formerly lived in Princeton, W. Va. Mr. Compton was born in Tams, W.Va., son of the late Cornelius and Ora Compton. Besides the sister with whom he lived, he is survived by two other sister, Mrs. Gerald White of Media and Mrs. Darrell King of Beckley, W.Va.; three brothers, O.D. Compton of Princeton, W.Va., Edwin J. and Elwood E. Compton of Panama Canal Zone. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Seaver Funeral Home, 1550 N. Walker St., Princeton, W.Va. Burial will be in Rose Lawn [Roselawn] Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va. Calling hours will be Thursday evening at the funeral home.
