Known as "Sister" to her family, Eva married Basil Rufus Houchins. A much-respected school teacher, he suffered from diabetes and died young, leaving Eva to raise their son David by herself.

Eva became a vice president of her brother's construction company in Amigo, WV, but later moved to Chester, PA where she worked as a technician for Sun Oil. She belonged to the Chester Christian Business Association and volunteered countless hours with the Pink Lady organization, assisting the medical staff and providing comfort to the patients in Chester Hospital. She attended Marcus Hook Baptist Church.

Eva was the daughter of Cornelius Moses Compton and Ora Kathrine Johnson and the wife of Basil Rufus Houchins.
