Ralph Burns was killed in the disaster at Winter Quarters #4, a coal mine. This was on May 1st,1900, May Day or Dewey Day as it was called then. 200 good miners died here. The population of the two towns was about 1400 persons. It is safe to say nearly every home lost someone. The Luomas lost 9, the Millers and Hunters almost as many. Familys went from reasonable prosperity to plenury in an instant. The scope of this tragedy can not be appreciated. This was the Twin Towers of the times. Eevn the count was a mess. No one source agreed on any thing. Names were misspelled half the time. Some dead were completley unidentifiable. Consequently, other bodies were missidentified and interred. Estimates of casualties went as high as 350. Different newspapers showed up and had a war of sensation to tell the greatest story. We can not begin to imagine.
