Mr. Austin was a Union Civil War veteran and member of Eugene GAR Post 7. He served in Company D, 16th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was the son of Joseph and Malinda Woodruff Austin. He is sometimes known as Jesse Milton Austin.
The 16th Illinois fought in the army of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and participated in the battles of Corinth, Chattanooga, Jonesboro, and Bentonville among several others.
