He enlisted in the Vermont National Guard on February 24, 1941, prior to the war, in Saint Alban's, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Single, without dependents.

Gilbert was "Killed In Action" on Luzon, Philippines during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
