The youngest of seven children born to Jane C. Jenney and Humphrey Gifford, Eliza or Elida Jane was quite independent. Like several of the Gifford and Jenney women, she attended Oberlin College.
By 1880 Elida was working as a clerk in the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. There she met widower William Henry Crowell, formerly of Ashtabula County, Ohio. They were married on 17 October 1894. Henry, at 58, had several children to his first marriage with Elizabeth Butterworth, whose brother, Benjamin Butterworth, was Commissioner of Patents and former Congressman from Ohio.
Shortly after her marriage, Elida invested in the fledgling Texas business of her nephew, Charles Eugene Smith. She continued as a partner when another nephew, Nicholas Jenny Gifford took over the Crowell-Gifford Furniture and Undertaking business from Charles.
After William Henry Crowell passed on to a better life on 7 June 1910, Elida most likely made her home back in Ohio for a time. She had bought the homestead property when her father died in 1882. Certainly by 1920, she had moved on to Seattle where another nephew, George Smith, lived. Elida Jane Gifford Crowell died in Seattle, but was buried in the family plot with her parents and sister Sarah in East or Quaker Cemetery.
